What's New in Xtract3D 2?

Xtract3D 2 handles massive point clouds and meshes, works smoothly in parts & assemblies, and adds smarter slicing, alignment, and analysis tools - so you can go from scan to CAD faster with fewer compromises.

New Engine & Architecture

Complete re-build for stability and speed. Meshes behave more like native SOLIDWORKS entities with planar Section Views, undo/redo, and Configuration-based suppression support.

Load & Save Massive Data, With No Ceiling

Scan data is stored as an external linked file alongside your part or assembly for fast loading and saving of huge datasets. Be limited by your hardware, not SOLIDWORKS file formats.

Slicing, Revamped

Easily manage slices - they're stored in the feature tree. Edit them just like meshes, with selection tools, decimation, and more, allowing for more control over your data. Plus, get blazing fast slicing on point clouds using GPU acceleration.

Rendering & Performance

Adaptive Rendering keeps huge point clouds responsive with without destroying your data. We also added more shader controls across the plugin, so you can see your data your way.

Assemblies, Revisited

Assemblies have been completely overhauled with performance improvements and bug fixes - No more ghost point clouds, no more subassembly issues, and no more losing the alignment of your data.

Deviation Analysis + Reports

Get color-mapped deviation against selected SOLIDWORKS geometry with stats, manual controls, callouts, and HTML report generation + direct export for easy sharing.

Upgraded Selection & Editing

Box, lasso, circle, and paintbrush selections let you quickly target and edit meshes, point clouds, and slices. Invert or isolate regions, copy to a new feature, decimate or erode your data, and more.

Native PointKit Integration

Open your part's scan data directly in PointKit for hole filling, remeshing, color processing, scripting, and more, without the need to re-import or realign your data.

Work in a familiar environment

Xtract3D 2 is a toolbar that works natively inside SOLIDWORKS. Import your 3D mesh data output from a 3D scanner and get straight to work with little or no training. Xtract3D 2 works seamlessly with SOLIDWORKS to enhance its sketching tools.

Xtract3D 2 tools behave like they've always been a part of SOLIDWORKS. With all the tools you need for CAD modeling in one place, it makes work more productive.

Handle massive scan data with ease

Use dense scan data as a visual guide for sketching CAD models in SOLIDWORKS with no lagging issues. Xtract3D 2 lets you build solid features quickly and easily for a smooth, uninterrupted experience. Xtract3D 2 was built specifically to handle a variety of reverse engineering and design projects, from simple 2D sketches to complex 3D surfaces.

Load, view, and process hundreds of millions of points directly in SOLIDWORKS - no rendering lag, no forced decimation, no data loss. Xtract3D 2 also removes the 2 GB data size limit that holds back other plugins: It saves scan data to a linked file next to your part or assembly, letting you load, wrangle, and save vast datasets without losing detail or bloating your SOLIDWORKS files.

System Requirements

Xtract3D 2 is a SOLIDWORKS add-in that works with SOLIDWORKS 2023 and later versions.

Operating System

Windows 10 or later

Hardware

  • Intel or AMD processor with 64-bit support
  • 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB recommended)
  • Graphics card with 4 GB VRAM minimum
  • Higher RAM/VRAM required for large point clouds

Software

SolidWorks 2023 or later

Key Functionalities

Direct Import of Scan Data• Import PLY, STL, OBJ, E57, LAS, LAZ, ASC, CSV, PTS, PBN, 3D3 • Support for large point clouds and meshes, with vertex colors and normals • LAS data classification filtering on import
Large File Support• Mesh and point cloud data stored outside SOLIDWORKS part/assembly • Enables fast loading, saving, and rendering of very large datasets - the only limit is your imagination (and your computers RAM)
Mesh and Point Cloud Processing• Box, lasso, circle, and paintbrush selection • Vertex/face level editing: delete, copy, invert, isolate selections • Decimation, erosion, and downsampling tools • Multi-mesh operations, undo/redo, macro feature integration
Transform & Alignment• Move, scale, rotate meshes in local, global, or user-defined coordinates • Apply Solidworks coordinate systems to meshes, and save mesh transformations as Solidworks coordinate systems • Single-click auto alignment of scans to CAD models, with partial mesh and CAD selection support
Slice, Snap, Fit, Project• Create 2D cross-sections from mesh or point cloud • Linear and radial multi-slice tools with adjustable offset and spacing • Easy manipulation, selection, and deletion of slice data • Snap and fit lines, arcs, splines, circles directly on section slices • Project geometry to closest mesh surface
Powerful Deviation Analysis• Compare scan data against selected CAD geometry • Color-mapped deviation, statistical report, HTML export • Add deviation callouts for key areas of interest
Seamless SOLIDWORKS Integration• Supports both part and assembly files • Undo / Redo support for importing / creation and deletion of Xtract3D 2 features • Use Planar Section Views to see cross-sections of your scan data • Supports configuration management and suppression states
PointKit Integration• Seamless integration of scan data with PointKit for advanced editing with tools such as hole filling, remeshing, color processing, scripting, and much more • No need to re-import or realign scan data - the linked PBN file that stores your scan data opens directly with PointKit
