3D Scanning 101: The Basics of the Structured-Light 3D Scanning Process

3D scanners are sophisticated devices that recreates physical objects into digital 3D representations. A structured-light 3D scanner specifically uses projected light patterns (either white light or blue light) in combination with a camera system to produce a 3D scan.

A structured-light 3D scanner takes a 3D scan of what it can see at one time. Field of view is the observable area.

Structured-light 3D scanners can be a single camera or a two camera system. The benefit of using a two camera system is that the scanner captures more information to build more reliable and accurate scans compared to using only one camera system.
